Malaysia: Winter solstice

The winter solstice, also known as midwinter, is an astronomical phenomenon marking the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year.  In the Northern Hemisphere this is the December solstice, and in the Southern Hemisphere this is the June Solstice.

Winter solstice is the 22nd solar term in Chinese calendar. It begins when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 270 degrees and ends when it reaches the longitude of 285 degrees. It usually begins around December 21-23. "Dong zhi" was originally celebrated as an end-of-harvest festival. Today, it is observed with a family reunion dinner, when "Tang Yuan" are eaten in sweet, gingery broth to symbolize family unity and prosperity.
