Australia: Koala

Koala is an arboreal herbivorous native to Australia. Its closest living relatives are the wombats. The koala is found in coastal areas of the mainland's eastern and southern regions, inhabiting Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Koalas from the northern populations are typically smaller and lighter in color than their counterparts down south.

This very cute koala maxicard came in the beautiful envelop below. I cannot thank Cindy enough for both the maxicard and the First Day Cover of Year of the Dog 2018.

Australia: Pink Diamond

Pink diamond is a type of diamond which has all the same elements as more commonly known diamonds except that they also exhibit pink color. The source of their pink color is greatly debated in the gemological world but it is most attributed to enormous additional pressure that these diamonds undergo during their formation.

Australia: Sydney

The Sydney Harbor Bridge is instantly recognizable, spanning the harbor from north to south.

The bridge is a steel through arch bridge across Sydney Harbor that carries rail, vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district and the North Shore. The view of the bridge, the harbor, and the nearby Sydney Opera House is an iconic image of Sydney, and Australia itself. The bridge is nicknamed "The Coathanger" because of its arch-based design.

Australia: Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over an area of approximately 344,000 square kilometers. The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage State in 1981. CNN labelled it as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Sadly, a March 2016 report stated that coral bleaching was more widespread than previously thought, seriously affecting the northern parts of the reef as a result of warming ocean temperatures.

More recently, in a news report published in November 2016, the article mentioned that some 67% of the corals died in the reef's worst-hit northern section. The situation was better in the central section, where 6% is perished, while the southern reef is in good health. One of the worst-hit areas is around Lizard Island in Far North Queensland, where around 90% of the coral has died. Dr. Anne Hogget, one of the directors from a research station in Lizard Island, said this was by far the worst event to hit the Great Barrier Reef since she started working there in 1990. She is hopeful that the reef is capable of recovery, but fears it may not be given an opportunity, as sea temperatures continue to rise.

The Australian Government has published a long-term sustainability plan for the reef, and pledged financial support for research into coral bleaching. The 2050 plan identifies the need to help make the reef more resilient to climate change in the future, while trying to lower carbon emissions.

Australia: Aurora Borealis Over the Sea

A beautiful card showing the Aurora Borealis
I have yet to see that with my own eyes...
And I think the best place to do so is in the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort...which has the glass igloos
It'd be awesome to stay a week there and watch the beautiful lights.

Australia: Mile Post

Yesterday, I got a card from Australia and The Netherlands

This card from Australia features a koala and kangaroo standing next to a mile post. With several destinations on the pole, I really like that Hong Kong and USA are on there because one is my hometown where the other one is where I currently live :D

Although it says your next choice of destination is obvious.....I find it difficult..UK? or Japan..? or even New Zealand...? Which one would you pick?
